چکیده

The Vrentas/Duda proposal for the diffusion of polymer-solvent systems, which is based on the free-volume theory, was employed in correlating and predicting mutual diffusion coefficients in highly concentrated polymer solutions. It has been observed that the predictive version of the model is capable of qualitatively representing the experimental data, while the use of an adjustable parameter greatly improves the performance of the model. The systems studied were poly(vinyl) acetatetoluene and Neoprene-acetone, and a comparison between experimental data and calculated values from the Vrentas/Duda model is reported. A new experimental apparatus based on the sorption technique was built to provide reliable diffusivity data on the Neopreneacetone system.

Two-chamber lattice model for thermodiffusion in polymer solutions

When a temperature gradient is applied to a polymer solution, the polymer typically migrates to the colder regions of the fluid as a result of thermal diffusion ~Soret effect!. However, in recent thermodiffusion experiments on poly~ethylene-oxide! ~PEO! in a mixed ethanol/water solvent it is observed that for some solvent compositions the polymer migrates to the cold side, while for other compo...

Modeling the Thermodynamic Properties of Solutions Containing Polymer and Electrolyte with New Local Composition Model

A new theory model based on the local composition concept (TNRF-modified NRTL (TNRF-mNRTL) model) was developed to express the short-range contribution of the excess Gibbs energy for the solutions containing polymer and electrolyte. An equation represented the activity coefficient of solvent was derived from the proposed excess Gibbs energy equation. The short-range contribution of interaction ...

Unusual thermal diffusion in polymer solutions.

Thermal diffusion forced Rayleigh scattering results on thermal diffusion of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) in ethanol/water mixtures are presented. In water-rich solvent mixtures, PEO is found to migrate towards regions of lower temperature. This is typical for polymer solutions and corresponds to a positive Soret coefficient of PEO. In solvent mixtures with low water content, however, the polymer...

Polymer-Mode-Coupling Theory of Finite-Size-Fluctuation Effects in Entangled Solutions, Melts, and Gels. 2. Comparison with Experiment

The predictions of polymer mode coupling theory for the finite size corrections to the transport coefficients of entangled polymeric systems are tested in comparison with various experimental data. It is found that quantitative descriptions of the viscosities, η, dielectric relaxation time, τ , and diffusion coefficients, D, of polymer melts can be achieved with two microscopic structural fit p...

Anomalous diffusion of proteins due to molecular crowding.

We have studied the diffusion of tracer proteins in highly concentrated random-coil polymer and globular protein solutions imitating the crowded conditions encountered in cellular environments. Using fluorescence correlation spectroscopy, we measured the anomalous diffusion exponent alpha characterizing the dependence of the mean-square displacement of the tracer proteins on time, r(2)(t) appro...
